In Cartagena, Murcia

The Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices Centre of Excellence (C-IED COE) supports the Spanish Navy with its Mobile DOMEX Team

10 February 2025 From 27 to 31 January, the C-IED COE organized a series of activities in “La Algameca” Naval Base (Cartagena) with the aim of strengthening the DOMEX (Document and Media Exploitation) capacities of the Spanish Navy.

DOMEX is a technical exploitation capacity focused on the collection, analysis and exploitation of the information found in documents and electronic media (computers, telephones, storage devices, UAVs, etc.) seized to the enemy. The aim is to extract relevant information and share it with Intel and operations’ staff in order to feed the intelligence cycle.

Considering the relevance of DOMEX in current conflicts, the C-IED COE organized last year several DOMEX Defence Capacity Building (DCB) activities in Germany and Hungary. This has been the first activity in 2025 and has counted on personnel from different units within the Spanish Navy.

There were several theoretical-practical sessions, focused on document exploitation (DOCEX), electronic devices (MEDEX), mobile phones (CELLEX) and UAVs, using advanced digital forensic tools. During the last two days, an exercise was carried out to put into practice the new knowledge acquired. In this exercise, attendees had to perform the complete process of technical exploitation, from the search and collection of evidence to the exploitation and analysis of the data obtained.

This activity provided attendees with new skills to perform the exploitation and analysis of the information obtained, an ability that will improve their units’ capacity to gather intelligence to support the decision-making process.

Through these initiatives, the C-IED COE shows, once again, its commitment with education and training, its availability to cooperate with other units and its referent role in the fight against the networks behind the use of IEDs.
