From 11 to 29 May, the C-IED COE celebrated the first iteration of its WIT and DOMEX courses, at the Combat Support Training Centre of the Romanian Armed Forces in Râmnicu Vâlcea. This outsourced location is in line with the Centre's commitment to the NATO-sponsored WIT and DOMEX training programmes, which are included in the 2026 Programme of Work, approved by the Centre's Steering Committee.
For the first time, this iteration united both courses, held in parallel, enriching their content and, specially, the practical exercises carried out.
In total, 32 students from 15 nations have been trained, reinforcing the C-IED COE’s role as NATO-accredited training centre.
The objective of the WIT course was to provide training in the technical operation of Level 1 (tactical level) IED incidents prior to arrival in theatre. During these three weeks, students have learnt to collect, check, evaluate and disseminate technical and tactical information on the enemy’s capacities directly related to their use of weapons, locations, findings, etc., including research on IEDs and their effects, and a later collection of remnants, intelligence and information.
On the other hand, the DOMEX course has a double aim. First, reinforcing level 1 (tactical level) technical exploitation capacities, mainly related to document exploitation (DOCEX), media exploitation (MEDEX), cellular phones exploitation (CELLEX) and unmanned systems (UxS) exploitation, when the latter are used as IED vectors.
And second, using resources shared by WIT students to analyze data and metadata from the previously extracted material. Such training innovation has proved very positive to both groups of students and it means an important improvement in the Technical Exploitation training programmes developed at the C-IED COE and in the knowledge on this discipline shared with Allied nations and partners.
