Málaga Hosts Inaugural Counter-IED Annual Conference, Positioning Itself as a Global Hub for Innovation and Collaboration

The Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices Centre of Excellence (C-IED COE) successfully hosted the first edition of its Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices Annual Conference (CIEDAC) in Málaga, Spain. This landmark event brought together leading experts, practitioners, and stakeholders from across the globe to advance the collective understanding and capabilities in combating Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

Officially inaugurated by the Director of the C-IED COE, Colonel Javier Corbacho Margallo, the conference was held with the support of both national and local authorities. Among the distinguished guests was Vice Admiral Saturnino Suanzes, whose presence underscored the strategic importance of the event. CIEDAC25 marked a significant milestone in international cooperation and innovation in counter-IED efforts.

The primary objective of the conference was to foster a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment, bringing together military personnel, law enforcement agencies, representatives from international organizations, and industry leaders. The forum provided an opportunity to exchange best practices, assess emerging threats, explore technological advancements, and identify both current challenges and viable solutions in the fight against IEDs.

Over the course of four days, nearly 200 participants representing 23 different countries engaged in a dynamic program of presentations, panel discussions, and networking opportunities. Seventeen subject matter experts shared their insights on topics ranging from operational tactics to policy development and the integration of next-generation technologies. Attendees also participated in interactive roundtable sessions designed to encourage dialogue and cross-sector collaboration.

In addition to the rich academic and operational content, the conference featured an exhibition area showcasing innovative technologies developed by specialized companies in the counter-IED domain. These demonstrations allowed participants to gain firsthand exposure to tools and systems that are shaping the future of threat detection, mitigation, and neutralization.

CIEDAC25 has not only set a new standard for global counter-IED events but also temporarily transformed the city of Málaga into a focal point for international security dialogue and technological exchange. The success of the conference has been widely acknowledged, both nationally and internationally, reinforcing Spain’s commitment to global security and the prevention of asymmetric threats.

With its first edition concluded on a high note, CIEDAC is expected to become a cornerstone event for the international counter-IED community in the years to come.
