Defeat the Device (DtD)
Branch Chief
Yarbay (LTCOL) Mustafa Çelik
The Defeat the Device (DtD) branch is dedicated to identifying capability gaps and operational requirements through the analysis and comparison of current technologies and common operational needs. Key responsibilities include conducting IED technical analyses, supporting technical exploitation studies, and maintaining a comprehensive repository of Counter-IED (C-IED) techniques and technologies. The branch evaluates both the limitations and the potential of these solutions in the context of defeating improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The DtD branch supports efforts to detect, recognize, and locate IED components; assist in neutralizing their intended effects; and facilitate the destruction, clearance, or prevention of IED emplacement. Additionally, it provides protection strategies for personnel, equipment, and infrastructure. The branch is also involved in concept development, experimentation, and collaboration on C-IED research and development projects. Further roles include advising on the development and evaluation of C-IED system standards, promoting interoperability of electronic countermeasure systems, and supporting NATO’s Defence Planning Process concerning C-IED capability requirements. It also plays a key role in the collection, analysis, and dissemination of C-IED lessons learned.
The DtD branch delivers specialized training focused on tactical exploitation and counter-IED response. Through its Weapons Intelligence Team (WIT) courses, the branch prepares personnel to conduct Level 1 Exploitation and Weapons Technical Intelligence operations, and equips senior instructors with the skills to develop and deliver advanced WIT training aligned with current operational standards.
