C-IED COE Education & Training

Education is the structured and purposeful instruction aimed at enhancing knowledge, developing skills, and building individual competencies. It serves as a developmental process that enables individuals to respond effectively to unforeseen and complex situations by cultivating an adaptive mindset.

Within NATO, Education and Training (E&T) are essential functions designed to prepare both the NATO Command Structure (NCS) and NATO Force Structure (NFS) for current and future missions, in alignment with the Alliance’s level of ambition.

Individual Training

Focuses on the acquisition of the specific knowledge and skills required to perform defined duties and tasks. This form of training equips personnel to respond effectively to predictable situations.

Collective Training

Involves rehearsing procedures and applying doctrine, plans, and operational practices to build and maintain collective capabilities at tactical, operational, and strategic levels. While it begins at the team level and progresses to headquarters and force-level formations, NATO emphasizes the collective performance of command structures. Commanders are empowered to pause, correct, and reinitiate training activities to ensure effective learning and performance.

NATO’s Education and Training framework consists of two main components:

The Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Centre of Excellence (C-IED COE) supports the Alliance across multiple functional areas, one of which is enhancing education and training. The Centre contributes to the readiness of NATO forces by supporting and conducting activities that prepare personnel for operations in environments where IED threats exist.

To achieve this, the C-IED COE delivers and facilitates a range of C-IED courses, seminars, and training events designed to increase awareness, build resilience, and ensure operational effectiveness against IED systems.

Below you will find the full catalog of courses offered by the C-IED COE.
